State of UEFI In Rust with Q&A

June 25, 2026

Webinar Airing at 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. PT

Presenters:

  • Michael Kubacki – Microsoft
  • Oliver Smith-Denny – Microsoft
  • Joey Vagedes – Microsoft
  • Karan Dhillon – Microsoft (Moderator)

Memory safety vulnerabilities account for up to 70% of critical security bugs in modern software and firmware is no exception. As government agencies and industry leaders push for adoption of memory-safe languages, Rust is rapidly emerging as a practical path toward more secure firmware development.

But what does adopting Rust in UEFI actually look like in practice?

In this webinar, a panel of Microsoft engineers will share lessons learned from four years of real-world Rust adoption in UEFI firmware development. The session will cover the strategy and rationale behind the open-source Patina project, practical implementation challenges, integration with existing firmware ecosystems, and the measurable security and engineering benefits seen along the way. Designed for firmware engineers, security architects, and technical leaders, this session includes live Q&A and practical guidance for organizations exploring secure firmware modernization.

Attendees are encouraged to watch the Patina: UEFI in Rust presentation to learn more about this topic before the webinar.

Post Quantum Computing: What You Need to Know About the UEFI Forum Updates

Presented by Jiewen Yao (Intel) and Sean Brogan (Microsoft)

Since Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms (ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA) are standardized by NIST, many standard organizations have started incorporating PQC into their specifications. NSA and NIST published the PQC transition timeline (CNSA 2.0 and NIST IR 8547). US and Europe shared the requirement for PQC adoption. It is important to include PQC consideration in UEFI specification.

In this talk, we will share the UEFI PQC enabling plan as we have discussed in USST, as well as the Code First process in EDKII, and welcome any feedback from industry.
